To fly an IFR approach, you need a certified receiver for the type of approach flown (ILS/GPS). On top of that, starting 2020 ADSB is going to require a certified GPS receiver to feed position to the transponder. Bottom line - use whatever you like in the experimental panel, but plan on having a certified GPS.

G1000 or GNS 430 - - Cessna 172 or 182. What to do?
I am a student pilot and looking to acquire an aircraft as soon as I get my PPL. I have nailed it down to a safe time builder like the 172 or 182 for safety and insurance reasons. I would love to splash on a Cirrus day one but I think that is a dumb idea from everything that I have read being a new pilot. I am located in Nor Cal and will be doing mostly valley flying but I am up in the air about buying the 172 vs. 182 and the G1000 vs. steam or the GNS 430. I have lost a lot (and I mean a lot) of money on boats due to depreciation in the past and I am not looking to do the same here. At best I would be looking at the first years the G1000 came out I believe 2004 or so. Obviously the price point between a clean 1998 and a 2004 with G1000 is significant. If I stretch on the top end I could afford a $250,000 price which on a really good day can get me into a used 182 with G1000's (maybe). Dropping below this price point I could get an older 182 steam, or a 172 with G1000 or 172 with steam / GNS 430 for the lowest price point. In reality the price difference between any of these is a few hundred dollars a month but I do want to be smart about the overall price and value.
I like the increased speed, range and additional useful load on the 182 but in reality I don't know how much I will use it vs. a 172. I have read you should buy a plane that fits 90% of your trips but I don't really know what 90% of my trips will be. If its just the wife and I or me taking a meeting with a business partner the 172 would be fine but me and two of my 215lb golfing buddies are not going to get very far. Obviously I would hate to buy a 172 and wish I had gotten the 182 and the same on the avionics G1000 vs other. I know I am probably asking you what I should have for dinner tonight but if anyone has worked through this process before and has any thoughts they would be appreciated.
